In rabbits, ears are known to be long and sensitive. Many livestock farmers experience ear diseases. We will talk about what kind of ear diseases can be in rabbits and how to treat them, in this article.
Myxomatosis is a serious viral disease, often leading to the death of rabbits. You can determine it by the bumps that appeared on the ears of the animal. Formations are often the size of a pigeon egg. often this disease occurs in a warm period. The virus is stable, up to a year is in dead animals. Mosquitoes and mosquitoes can also carry it.
often adults are sick, but sometimes young animals become infected from a rabbit. If left untreated, the disease spreads to the head and legs. Myxomatosis further causes purulent conjunctivitis, gluing of the eyelids.
With proper treatment, the cones after a couple of weeks are necrotic, and after recovery, the necrosis gradually heals over the course of a month. The problem is that the animal remains a carrier of infection.
The main prevention of myxomastosis is vaccination. Veterinarians advise you to carry out the procedure on the 45th day of the rabbit’s life. Three months later, to strengthen immunity, vaccination is done again.
They treat the disease with antibiotics and immunomodulators. To treat ear wounds, iodine solution is needed. The disease greatly weakens the immunity of pets, and after recovery they should be quarantined for three months.

Psoroptosis is nothing more than an ear tick. One of the most unpleasant and common diseases in rabbits. By an ear tick, animals are most often infected by contact with each other, but it happens that dirty cells, feeders or equipment serve as the focus of the disease. The disease occurs at any time of the year, but more often occurs in late winter.
The causative agent of ear scabies, a yellow tick, has a very small size and oval shape. It affects the auricle and the inner surface of the ear. It is difficult to see ticks with the naked eye, it is better to use a magnifying glass.
Rabbits during infection experience many inconveniences: scabies, weakened immunity.
Symptoms of psoroptosis infection are as follows:
- at the beginning of the disease, tubercles form in the ears, turning into bubbles with fluid. When they burst, the liquid flows out and dries;
- pets shake their heads, rub their ears on the cage, lose their appetite and become restless;
- if the first symptoms are not noticed, sulfur, dead cells and, as a result, scabies accumulate in the ears.
Sometimes standard symptoms are absent. A yellow tick can be recognized only by scratching the ears of a rabbit and its excessive activity.
It is best to go to the veterinarian to confirm the diagnosis. But if you are confident in it, you can cure rabbits yourself. Mix vegetable oil and turpentine in a 1: 1 ratio. Put the mixture into a syringe and treat all abscesses in the ears. It affects turpentine ticks, and oil helps soften crusts.
Additionally, treatment should include: acrodex, cyodrin, psoroptol and dicresil. Use them according to the instructions.
Prevention of scabies: mandatory quarantine of new animals, examination of the ears for ticks. Recommended periodically conducts deaccharization of rabbitry.

The video shows the severe stage of psoroptosis, describes treatment methods and demonstrates the result of treatment.
Purulent otitis media
Also a very dangerous disease. With poor treatment, it easily acquires a chronic form, causing abnormalities in the brain processes. As a result, purulent otitis media leads to the death of the rabbit.
The disease leads to: hypothermia, malnutrition, parasites, low immunity, head injury. In particular, ear scabies causes otitis media with poor treatment.
- the pet’s ears are badly rotting;
- the rabbit often itches, shakes its head and tilts it;
- the animal loses its appetite, looks tired and inadequately responds to touching the ears.
In general, the symptoms resemble psoroptosis. Consultation with a specialist does not hurt, since these two diseases are treated completely differently. Incorrectly selected medications can worsen the condition of the rabbit. With purulent otitis, anti-inflammatory drops are buried in the ears to relieve pain and itching.
Rabbits can become sick due to exposure to too low or high temperatures.
Ears get sick during hypothermia, like limbs. During the rounds of frost, the cold in rabbitry easily leads to frostbite of the offspring. If the female should give birth soon, keep warm in the mother liquor.
If when examining rabbits, swollen, frozen ears that are sensitive to touch are found, the animal has the first stage of frostbite. To prevent the pet from suffering, wipe off the ears with soft snow and take it to a calm, warm room. When the ears are dry, coat them with petroleum jelly, pork fat or camphor oil.
In the second stage, bubbles with fluid form in the ears. They burst leaving ulcers. Try to open the vesicles, and lubricate the damaged areas with iodine, zinc or camphor ointments.
In the third stage, the skin of the ears shrinks, dries up and falls off. Dead skin should be removed and a lot of warm straw should be put to the rabbits.
It happens, on the contrary, that pets have hot ears. This happens when the temperature in the rabbitry is higher than normal. If during the heat the rabbit drinks a lot of water and eats well, just move it to a cool room. But when the animal becomes motionless or lethargic, you need to contact the veterinarian.
Normal temperature for rabbits is from 19 to 27 degrees.
In rabbit ear diseases, the owner needs to make a correct diagnosis and begin treatment quickly. Sick animals should be put off immediately, unless the disease is not of a temperature nature. Inspection of other pets and preventive measures. purity of rabbitry, vaccination, comfortable temperature and a complete diet are also required. Newly acquired animals need to be quarantined for some time and monitor their well-being. Do not allow strangers to the cells. they can carry various diseases without knowing it. Also avoid contact of rabbits with other pets.
