Rabbit eye disease symptoms and treatment

August 7, 2019

The organs of vision in rabbits, as well as in other animals, are often susceptible to disease. The most commonly diagnosed are conjunctivitis and keratitis, characterized by inflammatory processes. Rabbit eye disease appears due to many causes. To find out why pathologies develop, possible injuries, infections, inflammations, allergic reactions should be excluded.

Why rabbits often watery and sour eyes

Pet eyes often watery and sour due to trash from hay, grass, dust. Similar problems may occur due to violation of the conditions of detention. In particular, the cell should not stand in a draft. It is necessary to clean the tray 2 p. per day. It is forbidden to spray perfume, household chemicals near rabbits. Watery eyes should be washed with infusion of chamomile, strong tea. Such procedures will be useful for prevention.

Discharges may appear due to clogging of the nasolacrimal canal. If this happens, you need to show the rabbit to the veterinarian. An irritating factor should also be identified. Usually this is an unsuitable litter (straw or sawdust) that needs to be replaced.

Diseases of the organs of vision in rabbits can develop due to poor grinding of teeth or impaired development. The so-called hooks grow in the animal, which touch the nasolacrimal canal and cause lacrimation. It is necessary to consult a veterinarian, as the rabbit alone will not be able to grind them. To prevent the hooks from appearing, animals need to be given wood rods.

Food allergy and vitamin deficiency in rabbits

If the animal has swollen eyes, a possible cause is an allergy to food. It is necessary to identify which feed or product gives a similar reaction, and exclude it from the diet.

If the menu is too monotonous, rabbits, especially young animals, can develop vitamin deficiency. Vitamin deficiency causes conjunctivitis and complete loss of vision. To prevent this, rabbits are given fortified fish oil.

Important. For the prevention of diseases of the organs of vision, carotene must be included in the diet of rabbits.

Treatment of conjunctivitis in rabbits

If the red eyes are swollen and festering, the animal may develop a purulent form of conjunctivitis. The disease is characterized by inflammation of the mucosa and the appearance of pus. To clarify the diagnosis and choose an antibiotic, the veterinarian does bacterial culture. According to the results, the drug is prescribed in drops, which is used 1-2 p. per day.

The treatment of conjunctivitis in domestic rabbits is carried out using Furacilin. The instructions for the drug prescribe stir the tablet in 0.5 cups of hot water. Then the resulting solution should be cooled. Washing is done up to three times a day.

If crusts have formed on the eyelids, they must be removed before the procedure. To do this, use “Boric acid” (3% solution), in which a piece of gauze is moistened. It is applied to the eyelids for two minutes. When the crusts soften, they are removed with a napkin.

After washing over the eyelid, “Tetracycline ointment” or other external preparation containing an antibiotic and a corticosteroid is laid. The procedure is done three times a day. Instead of ointment, you can use a 30% solution of Albucid. If after 3 or 4 days of treatment the pus in the animal still continues to stand out, you need to consult a veterinarian for advice.

Important. Since the rabbit will behave restlessly during medical procedures, it is recommended that they be performed with an assistant.

Keratitis in rabbits

Conjunctivitis in rabbits is often accompanied by keratitis, characterized by inflammation of the cornea. Its symptoms: clouding of the cornea, secretion of tears and pus, the appearance of a mucous membrane. Therapy of the disease is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, corneal protectors, antibiotics.

Keratitis can develop into a corneal ulcer, which progresses quite quickly: in 1-2 days, the eye can leak. Therapy consists in the surgical removal of dead tissue layers. Then, anti-inflammatory drops are instilled into the animal. A complication of keratitis sometimes becomes a thorn. a dense, white, opaque scar on the cornea.

Myxomatosis. a formidable disease of decorative animals

Owners of ornamental rabbits often encounter myxomatosis, an acute infection caused by the myxoma virus. Symptoms of the disease include: damage to the organs of vision, accompanied by discharge of pus, sneezing, refusal to feed.

The disease progresses rather quickly, within 5-6 days, and often ends with the death of animals. Surviving rabbits acquire immunity. The most dangerous is the summer period, since the spread of the virus is promoted by blood-sucking insects (fleas, mosquitoes, mosquitoes). For the prevention of myxomatosis, it is recommended to vaccinate on time.

If the animal got an eye, then it developed exophthalmos, which is characterized by protrusion of the eyeball. As a result, the eyelids do not close, and the mucous membrane dries up. The cause of the disease is an inflammatory process that develops with violations of the development of tooth growth and improper grinding. Such a pathology requires the removal of the eyeball.

Other rabbit eye diseases

Other diseases of the organs of vision include:

  • occlusion (obstruction) of the cornea;
  • cataracts of the eye;
  • inversion of the eyelids;
  • uveitis of the eye;
  • abscess;
  • neoplasms.

Occlusion or obstruction is characterized by an increase in connective tissue on the cornea. Treatment: surgical intervention, then prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs (for example, "Prednisolone"). If the case is started, the diseased eye is removed.

The main symptom of cataracts is a clouding of the lens. As a result, the function of vision is impaired. As a drug therapy, drops of Quinax, Albendazole, Fenbendazole are used.

Uveitis is manifested by inflammatory processes in the choroid of the eyes. Symptoms include redness, lacrimation, photophobia, impaired or loss of vision. For uveitis, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and vasodilators are used.

In rabbits, folds of the skin of the eyelids (the so-called inversion) can develop incorrectly. In this case, eyelashes grow towards the mucous membrane of the eye and injure it. Pathology is treated surgically: the animal is made plastic eyelids.

Due to infection, an abscess may appear, while the space behind the eyeball is filled with pus. The diseased eye is removed, then antibiotics are used.

Neoplasms of the eye are treated mainly by the surgical method, chemotherapy and radiation are also performed.
